Temperature, Humidity & Barometric Pressure Sensors: Outdoor Radiation Shielding & Accuracy

Multi-plate solar radiation shield housing atmospheric temperature and humidity sensors.

Air temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure form the baseline atmospheric dataset for virtually every environmental application. However, obtaining true ambient readings outdoors is challenging: unshielded temperature sensors exposed to direct midday solar radiation can report errors in excess of +5°C.

This technical guide explains how industrial multi-parameter probes work, how passive multi-plate radiation shields function, and how to prevent sensor drift in high-humidity agricultural and coastal environments.

1. Sensing Core Technologies

1.1 Temperature & Relative Humidity Sensing

Modern sensors combine a precision Platinum Resistance Thermometer (such as a PT100/PT1000 element) with a capacitive polymer relative humidity sensor on a single micro-substrate. As moisture diffuses into the dielectric polymer layer, capacitance changes proportionally to relative humidity.

To operate reliably within pesticide-treated orchards or dusty environments, the sensor tip must be enclosed in a sintered bronze or porous PTFE hydrophobic filter cap that allows water vapor diffusion while repelling liquid droplets and airborne chemicals.

1.2 Piezoresistive Barometric Pressure

Atmospheric pressure is measured via micro-machined silicon piezoresistive diaphragms. Changes in atmospheric weight flex the internal silicon membrane, generating a linear change in resistance. When integrated into an outdoor agricultural weather station, pressure trends provide early warnings of approaching frontal rain systems and barometric drops.

2. The Critical Role of Solar Radiation Shields

A sensor datasheet may advertise an accuracy of $pm 0.1^circ ext{C}$, but without an aerodynamic solar shield, direct solar irradiance and thermal infrared reflection from ground surfaces corrupt the measurement:

  • Multi-Plate Passive Louvers: Composed of UV-stabilized, high-reflectance white thermoplastic plates designed to reflect downward and upward solar radiation while permitting natural wind aspiration through the internal cavity.
  • Aspiration Requirements: In calm conditions under intense sunshine, passive shields may trap warm air; pairing with real-time wind speed data from an ultrasonic wind sensor helps data models flag calm-air thermal bias.

3. Application in Agronomy & Environmental Control

Accurate ambient air temperature and humidity are essential components for computing Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) and crop transpiration dynamics.
